Understanding enzyme specificity from its three-dimensional structure: the case of 7β-HSDH

In a recent article published on Proteins, we present the structure of the enzyme 7β-HSDH, able to produce a compound of pharmacological interest. Together with the structural data, which enable us to theorize the rationale behind enzyme specificity, we also present the results of biochemical assays confirming our hypothesis. Novel knowledge on this enzyme’s fine reactivity is prospected to allow a better exploitation of its biocatalytical potential.
