Studies conducted over the last twenty years to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms related to the activity of stem cells have led, oftentimes, to reconsider old concepts of regenerative medicine and tissue repair following stem cell transplantation. This article reviews the state of the art of research on these important issues.
